These visual resources can help set the stage for storytelling, assisting you in forging a strong emotional connection between your content and UC Berkeley.

Typography

Our university typeface, Freight, features Sans, Text, and Micro fonts. The Freight family was selected because it is warm, open, and legible at all sizes. Flexibility comes from using one type family that contains all necessary styles.

Freight

Freight is an Open Type font family made up of three styles, each with six weights and an extensive character set. Each style includes small capitals, fractions, standard ligature, lining and oldstyle figures, and more. The Freight family supports over 90 languages. The Berkeley Brand Freight font family can be accessed free of charge from Adobe Fonts through the Creative Cloud desktop application.

If you are building a website with another platform, you will need to enter into a licensing agreement with Typekit in order to use Freight fonts. The basic cost runs $8 per month (1M page views per month). If your department needs more page views, Typekit has business plans to fit your needs.

Open Sans

Open Sans is recommended as the free web font alternative to Freight Sans. Commissioned by Google and optimized for web and mobile interfaces, Open Sans has excellent legibility characteristics in its letterforms. Like Freight Sans, it is a humanist sans serif typeface with a friendly appearance. Open Sans is downloadable free of charge at Font Squirrel.
